A loud, anxious storyteller who makes personal disaster feel remarkably cozy.

Derek Sheen builds his sets out of loud, sweaty insecurity. He paces the stage, leaning into the microphone to share stories about his depression, his drinking, or his physical decay. He does this with a disarming warmth. When a bit threatens to get heavy, he undercuts the tension with a goofy aside or a sudden, booming laugh at his own expense. He invites the audience to sit inside his personal disasters.

He occupies a specific lane in standup as an alternative comedy lifer. He is the comic the heavyweights take on tour, frequently opening for Brian Posehn and Patton Oswalt. He operates largely outside the television circuit, building his audience in independent venues and rock clubs instead of traditional comedy chains.

His albums track the anxieties of a guy trying to keep his head above water. He excels at dismantling his own ego, as he does on Macho Caballero, pointing a harsh light at his aging body and his daily frustrations. If a rant starts to drift into unanchored anger, he pulls it back by reminding the room what a mess he is.

Before coming back to standup in his thirties, Sheen spent fifteen years playing music professionally. That background shows in his stage rhythm. He knows exactly how long to let an awkward silence hang before he hits the crowd with the punchline.
