What we do with your data

Short version: we collect what you give us, we don't sell it, and you can delete everything with one email.

What we collect

If you sign up, we store the email address and unique ID that come back from Firebase Authentication (our login provider), along with whether that email has been verified. If you subscribe to the Wednesday letter or follow comedians, we store those choices with your account.

If you mark specials, make lists or pick a username, we store those too. Your marks and private lists are only for you. Anyone with the link can see a public list, with the username on it.

Cookies

We use a single session cookie to keep you logged in. That's the only cookie we set. If you play a YouTube clip, YouTube may set its own (see YouTube below).

Analytics

We don't run third-party analytics. No Google Analytics, no Plausible, no pixel trackers. Our server keeps normal application logs (request paths, errors) for operational reasons; those are not used for behavioral tracking.

YouTube

Brick Wall Comedy uses YouTube API Services: the embedded YouTube player to play clips, and the YouTube Data API to get public details of videos, such as the title, length and view count. We keep those details with the catalog, and the site shows them only while they're less than 30 days old.

When a page shows a clip, its thumbnail image loads from YouTube's image server, so your browser sends Google its IP address, like any image from another site. The player itself loads only when you press play. From then on, YouTube and Google may collect data and set cookies, as described in the Google Privacy Policy (http://www.google.com/policies/privacy). The player and what plays in it, including any ads, come from YouTube.

We don't access or store anything from your YouTube or Google account through the YouTube API Services. Using the site also means agreeing to the YouTube Terms of Service; see our terms of use.

Images

Cover images on special pages and in lists load directly from the image server of the special's distributor, label or streaming service, from YouTube or from TMDB. Your browser sends that server your IP address, as with any image from another site. These are the servers:

  • Distributors and labels (Comedy Dynamics, Shopify stores, Bandcamp, 800 Pound Gorilla): comedydynamics.com, www.comedydynamics.com, cdn.shopify.com, *.bcbits.com, 800poundgorillamedia.com
  • Streaming services (Amazon Prime Video, Apple, HBO): m.media-amazon.com, *.mzstatic.com, beam-images.warnermediacdn.com
  • YouTube: *.ytimg.com
  • TMDB: image.tmdb.org

We no longer copy these images to our own server. Showing the official art that identifies a special is our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Some older covers load from our own image server, or from the site we first found them on. Comedian portraits and the letter's illustrations load from our own image server.

Sharing

We don't sell, rent, or share your email or account data with third parties. Firebase Authentication handles the login flow itself, on Google's infrastructure.

Your controls

You can unsubscribe from any email with the link in every letter, or from your profile. If you want your account and its subscription preferences removed from our records entirely, get in touch (see below).
