Gary Vider
Stand-up specials
Classic setup-punch jokes delivered with absolutely zero enthusiasm.
Gary Vider does not try to sell you the joke. He stands almost perfectly still, holding the microphone near his chest, and delivers lines in a flat, quiet monotone. When a punchline hits, he doesn’t smile to acknowledge it. He just waits out the laugh, looking vaguely disappointed to be there at all.
His act relies on the contrast between tightly written jokes and the absolute lack of energy in his performance. He actively leans into his lack of presence, pointing out that when he walks into a room, nobody notices. He tells classic setup-punch jokes about paying fifty thousand dollars for IVF only to realize his son is going to inherit his exact physical build, leaving him feeling scammed. The mechanics are traditional club comedy, delivered without a drop of enthusiasm.
He works the New York club circuit, performing regularly at the Comedy Cellar. While many comics rely on volume or physical pacing to command a late-night basement crowd, Vider forces the room to quiet down and lean in. He refuses to raise his voice. If a bit misses, he doesn’t pivot or mock the crowd. He just moves to the next sentence at the exact same pace.
His podcast, #1 Dad, details his childhood with a con-man father. After growing up around a man whose survival required aggressive charm and constant hustling, Vider built a standup act out of standing completely still and refusing to charm anyone.
