Smooth acoustic melodies hiding filthy, precise punchlines.

JR De Guzman stands on stage with an acoustic guitar, fingerpicking gentle folk and R&B progressions to set his timing. He has a smooth singing voice, and he uses it to disarm the room. The act relies on contrast. He will strum a warm chord, flash a polite smile, and sing a filthy punchline in perfect pitch.

Musical comedy often treats the song itself as the joke, but De Guzman uses his melodies to pace out strict standup setups. He frequently stops playing entirely to let a deadpan observation land in the quiet room, then picks the tempo right back up. He works the crowd while strumming, asking questions and weaving the answers into acoustic riffs that sound fully rehearsed.

He sells out theaters and large clubs, drawing crowds by pairing singer-songwriter earnestness with standup timing. He maintains a heavy touring schedule and has built a broad following through his specials, holding wide stages with just a guitar.

He builds much of his material around his Filipino-American background. His immediate family is composed entirely of dentists, a detail he uses to frame his own life choices. He recounts his father’s blunt feedback with genuine affection, sometimes singing the insults back to the audience. Born in the Philippines and raised in California, he previously worked as a music teacher, which explains why the guitar in his hands operates like an actual instrument rather than a comedy prop.
