Pablo Francisco
Stand-up specials
A frantic vocal mimic who turned movie trailers into a standup staple.
He holds the microphone close to his mouth and turns his voice into a foley stage. Pablo Francisco does not deliver a monologue. He builds an audio track. He beatboxes a techno rhythm, drops in the heavy thud of a fake punch, and shifts into the booming, gravelly register of a blockbuster movie announcer. He paces with a nervous energy, racing from an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression to a panicked scream before the audience can catch up.
He hit a massive peak in the early 2000s, becoming an inescapable fixture on cable comedy. Long before social media, his audio clips were traded on file-sharing networks and early video platforms. He became the comedian middle schoolers memorized to perform for their friends at the lunch table. He tours theaters and comedy clubs on the strength of that specific, deeply nostalgic era of high-octane standup.
The defining bit of his career is “Little Tortilla Boy,” a sprawling, surreal fake movie trailer anchored by his flawless mimicry of late voiceover artist Don LaFontaine. The routine relies on his commitment to the cinematic scale of the joke, populating the imaginary film with sudden appearances from Danny Glover and Keanu Reeves. He is less interested in traditional setups and punchlines than in sustaining a frantic vocal jam session. When he steps away from the sound effects to attempt standard observational material, the room loses momentum. The crowd is always waiting for him to lower his register and start narrating a fake explosion.
His instinct for rapid-fire character work was sharpened during a stint as a featured player on MADtv in the mid-1990s.
