Showtime’s A Pair of Jokers series operated on a simple premise: put two rising stand-ups in front of a live audience and let them split a half-hour broadcast. For this 1993 episode, the network matched the observational storytelling of Rondell Sheridan with the ventriloquism of Jeff Dunham.
Dunham introduces the crowd to Walter, the perpetually annoyed retiree who anchors his portion of the show with complaints about marriage and aging. It is an early look at the character work that eventually turned the performer into a touring industry. The puppet’s permanent scowl and abrasive punchlines play well against the polite studio crowd.
Sheridan acts as the grounding counterweight. Long before he became known to a generation as the television dad on That’s So Raven, he was working clubs with a physical approach to everyday frustrations. He acts out his premises, leaning into the goofy charm that made him a reliable booking on late-night talk shows.
