Ardal O’Hanlon steps onto an American stage to explain exactly why dogs make the best drug smugglers and to evaluate the liquid absorbency of various barnyard animals. His delivery relies on a gentle, bewildered absurdity that feels entirely out of step with the high-volume aggression typical of early-2000s stand-up. He operates with a quiet curiosity, casually turning over everyday oddities to see how they work.

By the time he filmed this 2001 set at the Hudson Theatre in New York City for the fifth season of Comedy Central Presents, O’Hanlon was already a massive television figure overseas thanks to his role as Father Dougal McGuire on the sitcom Father Ted. Earning his own American television introduction, he spends the half-hour outlining the cultural differences between Americans and the Irish. Standing in front of a baffling stage prop depicting a giant shoe and a mousehole, he also takes a few minutes to lay out his personal complaints about having sex.
