Arj Barker treats mundane frustrations with the misplaced conviction of a guy who thinks he just cracked a major conspiracy. His second Comedy Central Presents half-hour thrives on this specific brand of dry absurdism. The standout chunk dismantles Halloween urban legends, pointing out that hiding razor blades in candy simply is not fiscally prudent. He wishes parents had invented cooler myths instead, pitching the idea of hidden caterpillar eggs that make kids crap butterflies. The rest of the set applies the same slow-burn logic to Citibank’s branding choices and the condescending tone of Google search suggestions.

Running a standard 21 minutes, the televised set aired in the spring of 2006 as part of the showcase’s tenth season. Barker was already a seasoned headliner who had recently co-created the Off-Broadway staple The Marijuana-Logues.

This performance captures him right on the precipice of a wider breakthrough. The following year, he would reach a new American television audience playing the perpetually unhelpful Dave on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords while simultaneously building a massive touring footprint in Australia.
