Carlos Alazraqui spent years being heard but not seen, most notably as a manic cartoon wallaby and the voice of a tiny, taco-obsessed dog. For his Comedy Central Presents set, he uses his rubbery face and high-energy physicality to prove he is more than just a vocal cord for hire. He relies heavily on sound effects, rapid-fire impressions, and a theatrical stage presence that makes his act feel closer to a one-man variety show than a standard microphone-and-stool set.
The performance was taped at the Hudson Theatre in New York City and aired in February 2004. At the time, Alazraqui was just starting to find mainstream on-camera fame as the tightly wound Deputy James Garcia on Reno 911!.
Much of the set leans into his unique career trajectory. He jokes about how voicing the Taco Bell chihuahua fails to attract women, though it works wonders when he gets pulled over by the police. Born to an Argentine mother and a Spanish father, he also pokes fun at his own heritage, contrasting his real life with his on-screen persona of a Mexican-American officer whose Spanish is terrible. Other segments take a turn toward social commentary, with Alazraqui likening the United States to a cocky teenager and questioning the entire concept of honorable warfare.
