Frank Caliendo built his career on being a human soundboard, and this 2004 half-hour special serves as a time capsule of the mid-2000s impressionist boom. Recorded at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, the set relies on Caliendo’s high-energy physical mimicry and his ability to jump between characters without taking a breath. At this point in his career, Caliendo was pulling double duty on late-night television as a cast member on MADtv and on sports broadcasts with his weekly NFL predictions on Fox.

Rather than building long, narrative-driven stand-up routines, Caliendo strings together short, punchy premises designed to get him to the next voice. His signature bits are all here, including a segment on President George W. Bush looking like he is constantly squinting into the sun. The centerpiece of the set is his caricature of broadcaster John Madden, complete with frantic hand gestures and sudden, loud sound effects. He also throws in quick-fire impressions of Robin Williams, Al Pacino, and Scooby-Doo, often letting the voices collide by having one celebrity impersonate another.

While the material is firmly of its era, the mechanics of Caliendo’s vocal control are impressive. The set is clean and fast, relying on the crowd’s recognition of the targets at a time when his caricatures were staple features of weekend sports television.
