An anxious half-hour of petty grievances and stifled laughter.

Jeremy Hotz built an entire career on looking like he would rather be anywhere else. Long before he branded his theater tours around the concept of misery, this early half-hour captures the Canadian comic’s signature anxious energy. He delivers his material through stifled laughter with a hand frequently clamped over his mouth, pausing only to point out the indignity of a given situation. The act is entirely built on distress. The set leans heavily into petty grievances, hitting peaks when he details the mechanics of cheating at the board game Battleship, the inescapable trauma of the men’s locker room, and a long list of complaints about his own nose.
Aired in June 2000 as part of the third season of Comedy Central Presents, the broadcast served as an introduction to American cable audiences.
Hotz had gained industry traction three years earlier with a standout gala performance at the Montreal Just For Laughs festival. The resulting attention led to a string of late-night television appearances and the development deals with American networks that ultimately put him on this stage.
