Zach Galifianakis sits at a piano, plinking out soft melodies while delivering disconnected one-liners. He isn’t telling stories. He is cultivating a quiet, uncomfortable atmosphere where the silence between jokes does as much work as the punchlines. By contrasting pleasant background music with deeply weird concepts, he discards the standard rhythm of club comedy.

Filmed in 2001 at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, the episode aired just before his short-lived VH1 talk show. At the time, he was a fixture of the underground scene with only a few minor film credits to his name. The set features early staples of his act, from his introduction of Marcus the Timid Pimp to his complaints about the optics of eating alone at Chuck E. Cheese.

The performance ends with an elaborate conceptual bit. An a cappella choir, introduced as twelve of his ex-girlfriends, sings “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles while he silently displays written jokes on a large sketchpad.
