Carlos Ballarta takes a stand against Latin American religious dogmas and cultural sensitivities from the altar of a gothic chapel. Wearing his signature long hair and dark sunglasses, the comedian positions himself in the Capilla Gótica of Mexico City’s Centro Cultural Helénico to deliver a focused, low-energy monologue that reads like an anti-sermon. This 2021 release represents his third Netflix special, making him the first Spanish-speaking stand-up to reach that milestone.

Originally toured under the confrontational title ‘Dios está muerto’ before facing censorship and venue cancellations in conservative Mexican states, the hour was rebranded to ‘False Prophet’ (Falso Profeta) by the time of its filming. The centerpiece of the set is a direct critique of the Catholic Church, which Ballarta compares to a multi-level marketing pyramid scheme like Herbalife, complete with his reading of actual bible verses to highlight the absurdity of the texts. He also targets the stark contrast between American and Mexican gun cultures, joking that buying an assault rifle in a US Walmart is as casual as picking up Hass avocados.

While much of the material is fueled by his characteristic societal cynicism, Ballarta balances the grand religious critiques with personal identity crises and the domestic realities of millennial parenthood. The hour closes on his notorious closing bit about the untouchable status of beloved Mexican TV figure Chespirito, where he notes that Latin American audiences are fine laughing at God and abortion but draw the line at childhood television icons.
