Before he was a ubiquitous television host and sitcom fixture, Drew Carey was a working Ohio comic who figured out how to turn his everyday exasperation into punchlines. Human Cartoon catches him at the exact moment his hapless midwestern bachelor persona crystallized into something bankable. He leans into the blue-collar reality of auto parts dealers, bad quarterbacks, and high school reunions, armed with a crew cut, heavy glasses, and a delivery that makes his complaints sound like conversations at a local bar.

Aired on Showtime in 1993, the set arrived two years after a breakout appearance on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show and just before his network acting career took over. The writing is tight enough that it won a CableACE Award, built on traditional setups rather than grand theatricality. He gets increasingly worked up over minor inconveniences, culminating in an extended rant about football owner Art Modell that eventually detours into an impression of Foghorn Leghorn as a U.S. congressman.
