Wanda Sykes tackles politics and aging at her alma mater.

Wanda Sykes returns to her alma mater with an hour that functions as a homecoming, utilizing a room that already loves her to deliver a set that is half political fatigue, half domestic frustration. She begins by comparing life as a modern liberal to being trapped in ‘the shittiest escape room ever’. It sets the tone for a performance that balances broad public exasperation with specific physical bits, including a recreation of Donald Trump’s awkward party dancing.
Filmed in February 2026 at Robert C. Ogden Hall at Hampton University, where Sykes graduated in 1986, the Netflix special marks her third hour for the streamer, coming during her ongoing run co-creating and starring in the sitcom The Upshaws. The production was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Julie Dash, who employed an all-women-of-color camera crew and mentored student drone operators from Spelman College.
The set transitions from national politics to specific personal history, starting with a reminiscence about her college cafeteria’s infamous ‘Gravy Lady’ before shifting to a debate over washcloths and the annoyance of waiting in self-checkout queues just to work for free. Now in her sixties, Sykes makes humor out of running out of breath on stage, segues into jokes about her French wife, and touches on the stress of teaching her teenagers to drive.
