Instead of renting out a historic theater or a polished club, Jeff Cerulli opted to shoot his debut special in the basement of the Gaf West, a Hell’s Kitchen pub where he has co-run a weekly comedy night since 2016. There are no soaring balconies or custom backdrops here; the stage is set against exposed pipes, low ceilings, and Christmas lights. Cerulli leans into the venue’s dingy character from his opening minute, joking that his childhood dream was always to record a comedy set in a cramped basement that might have a rat problem.
The low-key, DIY approach fits Cerulli’s background as a documentary filmmaker. He edited the hour himself, keeping the focus entirely on his pragmatic stage presence. His material centers on the mundane realities of adult life in New York, including the decision to propose to his partner after a full decade together and the exhausting task of helping an aging parent.
He also explains why he had to flee his previous apartment due to lead contamination, mocks the public’s endless appetite for true crime documentaries, and explains why the YouTube comments under old music videos are the kindest place on the internet.
