Mitch Fatel’s whole act hinges on a highly specific contrast: he speaks with the soft-spoken, giggly innocence of an overgrown toddler, while saying things that would get a normal person thrown out of most public spaces. On his debut stand-up album, he weaponizes this persona to deliver a stream of deeply dirty, sex-focused material that somehow feels sweet, even when he is talking about public masturbation or comparing the financial investment of a sexual encounter to that of a blueberry muffin.
Recorded at the Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis, the 2004 album caught Fatel at a moment when his club popularity was boiling over. Having already established himself on late-night television and as a regular at New York’s Comedy Cellar, this release packaged his well-honed stage act for a national audience. The bits here move briskly, touching on the logistics of female shower habits, the simple joy of having a penis, and his own self-deprecating lack of intelligence.
The humor is unapologetically crass, but the hesitant delivery prevents the material from feeling hostile. Fatel’s broken cadence and naive delivery give the impression of an accidental pervert who is just as surprised by his thoughts as the audience is.
