Comedy Central’s Premium Blend operated as the definitive proving ground for working comics in the late nineties, offering five-minute television spots to performers on the verge of breaking through. Renee Hicks stepped onto the showcase stage during the show’s third season in 1999, bringing her tightly constructed, conversational style to the short format.

Before turning to stand-up, Hicks worked as a CPA and competed as an All-American distance runner. That background translated into a highly disciplined, grounded stage presence. While late-nineties comedy often leaned heavily into loud, chaotic characters, Hicks worked with straightforward observational precision.

Her set on this Tommy Davidson-hosted episode, which also featured Tim Young, Peter Johansson, and Scott Bloom, captured a seasoned club comic hitting her stride. Within a year, she would record her own half-hour special for the network and become the first Black woman nominated for Best Female Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards.
