Before he pivoted to writing West End musicals and dystopian novels, Ben Elton was the reigning motormouth of British stand-up. Very Live captures him at the peak of his stage powers, pacing the boards in a sharp suit and delivering hyper-verbal rants. He takes the indignities of nineties living like public transport, corporate advertising, and the enforcement of dog waste laws, escalating them into breathless, highly structured monologues.

Filmed at the Leeds Grand Theatre in May 1993, the set arrives at a transition point in his career. Elton had already cemented his television legacy as the co-writer of The Young Ones and Blackadder, and was actively publishing bestselling satirical fiction. You can see the novelist’s discipline in how he builds a routine here, constructing elaborate, logical arguments out of toilet humor and hand hygiene.
