Brian Aylward

Aylward does not ease into a room. He paces the floor with the microphone held tight, shouting like someone trying to be heard over a blaring jukebox. A typical bit starts with a common grievance, often an argument over a hotel bill or a translation mix-up, and escalates into a bellowing act-out where he plays both the rattled traveler and the impassive clerk. The cadence is rapid barroom patter, broken up by genuine wheezes of laughter at his own foolishness.

Instead of working the standard North American club circuit, he cut his teeth across East Asian expat bars and European basements. That touring map forced his delivery to stay visual and direct. If a setup depends on local slang or subtle phrasing, an international crowd checks out. He survives by aiming for physical embarrassments: bad massages, digestive disasters, and the indignity of middle age abroad.

His special Big In Asia, recorded in Mongolia, shows the appeal. What works is that he never plays the worldly sophisticate explaining another culture. He is always the clumsy Canadian who made the mistake. The material only drags when the volume stays pinned at maximum without enough punchlines underneath it.

Aylward grew up in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, where tavern storytelling is second nature. He tried standup on a bet while teaching English in South Korea, co-founded Stand Up Seoul, and turned it into an itinerant career, carrying Atlantic Canadian bluster to expat rooms worldwide.
