Watching Dave O’Neil is an exercise in lowered blood pressure. He ambles on stage, usually complaining about a minor physical ailment or a recent indignity involving his teenagers, and just starts chatting. He doesn’t deal in rigid setups and punchlines. Instead, he leans heavily on crowd work to get the engine running, asking a front-row couple what they do for a living just to seamlessly pivot into a story about inheriting his dad’s bumper-stickered Camry.

On stage

He is a massive fixture of Australian comedy. If you watch television there, you have seen him: he holds the record for the most guest appearances on the panel show Spicks and Specks, hosts multiple podcasts, and plays the inept lawyer Bob Stanley on the sitcom Fisk. But his real domain is the live circuit. He is the ultimate working comic, taking gigs at regional theatres, corporate lunches, and suburban pubs, and he knows how to adjust his pacing for all of them.

His material is completely, unashamedly domestic. He talks about CPAP machines, soft food, and the fact that he’s old enough to get the special seat on the bus. It isn’t edgy, and he never pretends it is. The act stays sharp because of his fast, hyper-local crowd work. O’Neil has a geographic memory that earned him the radio nickname “Mr Melways.” Tell him what obscure suburb you grew up in, and he immediately knows the exact intersection or defunct local business to drop into a joke. He uses geography to make a room of strangers feel like they are in on a private joke.
