Ed Gamble
Stand-up specials
Posh bluster and petty indignities turned up to thrash-metal volume.
Ed Gamble starts routines sounding like a reasonable, polite Englishman before rapidly revving himself into a state of vein-popping indignation. He will take an embarrassing domestic failure, like sneaking hotel pastries or causing a scene in an exercise class, and escalate it by shouting in breathless, full-throttle staccato. If a room hesitates on an absurd detail, he does not smooth it over. He glares, paces the floor, and repeats the exact offending line three times louder, forcing the crowd to swallow the indignity with him.
He sells out major theaters across the UK and beyond, supported by a massive following drawn from Off Menu, the food podcast he co-hosts with James Acaster. While many comics who run hit podcasts bring a loose hang to the stage, Gamble does the opposite. His live hours are tightly drilled, physical, and tuned for volume.
His special Blood Sugar turned his Type 1 diabetes into unsentimental punchlines instead of inspirational patter. He treats the chronic illness like an annoying administrative burden, getting miles of material out of hoarding jelly babies and explaining emergency protocol with impatient fury. When his material falters, it is usually on broader domestic topics like weddings or gym routines, where his sonic blast and polished act-outs feel oversized for the observation underneath.
Underneath the clean knitwear is a lifelong heavy metal fan who walks out to blast beats and thrash riffs. That friction between looking like a polite boarding school prefect and screaming like a frustrated frontman is the engine of his act.
