Liam Withnail
Stand-up specials
Loud club swagger stripped bare of any masculine pride.
He works a room with his whole upper body, pacing with an easy grin, tossing casual remarks into the front row and using whatever comes back to build speed. When he hits an ugly detail, like cardboard commodes or hiding biscuits from his wife, he pitches his voice into a mock-defensive squawk, daring the room to look away. If a heavy moment threatens to settle, he punctures it immediately with an offhand jab at his own ego.
In Edinburgh, especially at Monkey Barrel, he is fixture and furniture. Years of compere shifts taught him how to keep an audience warm without breaking a sweat, letting his solo hours feel like pub conversations even when they are tightly plotted. He operates right in the pocket where weekend club headliner meets festival storyteller.
His solo shows, such as Chronic Boom and Big Strong Boy, take genuinely rough experiences and strip them of self-pity. In the former, he tracks a ten-day hospital stay for ulcerative colitis on a whiteboard, treating serious illness as a sequence of practical embarrassments and ward politics. He is sharpest when dissecting his own failed attempts at masculinity. The pacing can wobble when an hour tips toward sincerity, but he usually catches himself before things turn soft.
Raised in Dagenham before moving to Edinburgh at eighteen, Withnail carries an East London cadence filtered through Scottish club rhythms. Managing a chronic bowel disease forced him to write honestly about physical limits, grounding his material in the unglamorous mechanics of staying upright. Between tours, he co-hosts the podcast Enjoy An Album alongside Christopher Macarthur-Boyd, keeping that same companionable banter going.
