Mike Bridenstine

Bridenstine works with an easy roll that quickly turns into a roar. He will open a bit on something ordinary, like serving on a murder jury or high school baseball, resting a hand on the mic stand like he is waiting for a drink. Then an odd detail catches his interest, his voice jumps a register, and he starts yelling. He does not shout out of anger. He shouts out of sheer excitement for whatever ridiculous point he wants to prove.

He is loud on purpose, and he never uses the volume as a shortcut.

Bridenstine came up in the 2000s Chicago underground alongside Kyle Kinane and Kumail Nanjiani, a scene he documented in his book The Perfect Amount of Wrong. In Los Angeles, he operates as an indie fixture, hosting his podcast Hunk and managing small comedy spaces. Other comics watch him because he pairs the grit of an old road comic with the curiosity of an archivist.

On his albums The Hungry Wolf Hunts Best and Hustle, the best material turns personal indignities into sweeping drama. He will spend several minutes untangling bad audition scripts or nineties pop culture, pushing the stakes until the room gives in. When a joke leans toward familiar club territory, he powers through on goodwill and tempo.

Raised in Iowa, he learned the trade in Chicago barrooms where nobody listened until someone made them. That background gave him an unshakable comfort on stage, and he still performs like someone thrilled to have the floor.
