He performs like a guy trying to keep up with his own brain. A premise will hit him mid-sentence, and rather than just describing it, he physically snaps into it. He becomes the character, providing his own sound effects with pops and breath noises. He might start talking about a mundane frustration and suddenly detour into an exact pantomime or a sudden impression of Christopher Lloyd. He doesn’t deliver punchlines so much as he constructs weird little scenes and lives inside them.

Active since the 1970s club boom, he is the kind of veteran other comics watch from the back of the room. General audiences usually recognize his face from decades of character acting in movies like Groundhog Day and Willow, but his live reputation is built on his speed. He released a special built entirely out of his appearances on Set List, a live format where comedians are forced to improvise an act from bizarre, unseen prompts.

His best material feels spontaneous, even when it isn’t. He treats his prepared jokes as a loose melody that he can riff around depending on the energy of the crowd. The trade-off for that looseness is that bits sometimes lose their shape, trailing off or dissolving into a string of weird vocalizations. But the physical commitment carries the act. When he meanders, he gets away with it because he is having so much fun inside his own tangents.

That jazz instinct is literal. His father was an arranger who worked with Thelonious Monk, and Overton approaches his stage rhythm with the same ear for spontaneous movement.
