Simon Hall steps on stage with a look of permanent, mild bewilderment. Working under the name Yon, he builds entire shows around tiny moments of confusion. He will take an isolated premise like seeing a car idling in a driveway at one in the morning and spin it into a frantic musical tangent. He sets up a quiet acoustic melody, hits a high, clear note, and then abruptly drops his hands to complain about a very specific social slight.

On stage
He spent over two decades as one-third of the musical trio Tripod. That run gave him a permanent spot in the Melbourne festival ecosystem. Today, he floats between group reunions, composing for video games, and mounting solo hours that sit somewhere between a theater act and a mild public breakdown.
He doesn’t write straightforward joke songs. The humor relies on the gap between his genuine vocal ability and the absolute pettiness of what he is actually singing about. He will commit to a complex time signature just to whine about doing the dishes. He has a habit of pushing a bit past its natural resting place, repeating a lyric until the room goes quiet, holding the awkwardness, and then forcing a second wave of laughter.
He sings with the earnestness of an ambitious theater kid, but he paces his complaints like a guy who just wants to go home.
