Steve Brown
Stand-up specials
A screeching cartoon voice backed by the posture of a barroom bouncer.
He walks out looking like an athlete and opens his mouth sounding like a cartoon character caught in a trap. The pitch is so high that the opening minute of his set is usually drowned out by confused laughter. Brown does not wait for it to pass. He points at whoever is giggling hardest, mimics their disbelief, and charges straight into the premise. On stage, he moves with a spring-loaded bounce, acting out conversations where his screech relentlessly deflates anyone trying to act tough.
He is a bedrock touring act across the southern circuit, selling out rooms in Atlanta and Charlotte on pure reputation. These are clubs where a comic either commands the floor with authority or gets swallowed alive. When an angry patron rushed the stage with a microphone stand in South Carolina, Brown did not freeze; he dropped into a boxer’s stance, slipped the blows, and handled the chaos like a man who has seen every possible barroom hazard.
His material leans on church culture, domestic spats, and the comedy of having a squeaky voice while looking like an enforcer. In Yeah, I Talk Like This, he turns that vocal contrast into an engine. The jokes are broad, and he will occasionally repeat a punchline just to ride the noise, but his physical energy never flags.
Raised in Tuscaloosa after being born in Detroit, he built his timing doing shows at Stillman College and fraternity events. That background still feeds his crowd work, which carries the easy, relentless ribbing of someone talking trash on a front porch.
