They're All Gonna Laugh at You!

Adam Sandler

Warner Bros. Records · Album · 1993 · 54 min

Audio sketches, juvenile rage, and acoustic songs from the SNL era.

Most of the record runs on the logic of a teenager left alone with a tape recorder and a four-track mixer. Bits build out of sudden vocal screeching, cartoonish sound effects, and bizarre escalations, set against acoustic songs about school cafeteria slop. It is juvenile and abrasive, capturing the specific, unhinged energy of someone trying to make his friends crack up in a basement.

Released on Warner Bros. Records in September 1993, the album arrived three seasons into Sandler’s run on Saturday Night Live. Rather than cutting a conventional stand-up set, he channeled the material he could never get past network censors into an audio sketch record modeled on Cheech and Chong.

Sandler tracked the studio material at The Hit Factory in New York and The Zoo in Encino, California, alongside producer Brooks Arthur. He brought in an SNL bullpen that included Chris Farley, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and writers Robert Smigel and Tim Herlihy. Two live numbers, “The Thanksgiving Song” and “Lunchlady Land,” were recorded at The Strand in Redondo Beach, California, in July 1993.

Sketches like “Toll Booth Willie,” where an unhinged Massachusetts toll collector endures relentless insults from drivers, and the aggressively explicit ballad “At a Medium Pace” rely on complete commitment to base-level shock value.

The album eventually sold over two million copies and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album.
