Inside the Comedy Mind — A New York Night Live!

Alan King

HBO · 1993

A 1993 showcase featuring Dennis Miller, Paul Rodriguez, and Rita Rudner.

Alan King plays ringmaster for a television event that bridges the gap between old-school Friars Club sensibility and the booming nineties stand-up scene. King sets the table, but the draw is the lineup: Dennis Miller, Paul Rodriguez, and Rita Rudner performing live in front of a massive New York crowd.

Originally broadcast as the grand finale to a major United States comedy festival, the showcase aired live on HBO on June 12, 1993. King was in the middle of his run hosting the interview series Inside the Comedy Mind, leveraging his decades of stage experience to act as a statesman for the medium.

The hour captures three acts at the height of their television fame.

Miller leans into his signature references fresh off his Weekend Update run. Rudner delivers precise, deadpan relationship material. Rodriguez closes out his sets by working the stage with high physical energy, capping off a straightforward night of premium cable programming.
