Breakfast Stealer

Andrew Sleighter

Comedy Dynamics · 2017 · 41 min

Quiet stand-up covering hotel breakfast heists and early married life.

The premise behind the title is simple: hotel continental breakfasts are unguarded, and nobody working a front desk for nine dollars an hour cares enough to stop someone from making a waffle. Sleighter treats the routine like a low-stakes heist, mapping out the logistics (waking up before 9 a.m. is the hard part) and the foolproof alibi if confronted, which is acting completely outraged that an employee would accuse him of driving across town just to steal eggs and wrap a peanut butter sandwich in Saran wrap for lunch.

Filmed in 2017 at the Dry Bar Comedy club in Provo, Utah, the 41-minute set caught Sleighter after appearances on Conan and The Late Late Show with James Corden, as well as a writing stint on Norm Macdonald’s Sports Show. Dry Bar enforces a strict clean-comedy policy, a constraint that often pushes performers into corny territory, but Sleighter avoids the usual traps through steady, unhurried pacing.

He spends the rest of the set on his first year of marriage, which he describes as a cheat code for claiming to have a family when it is really just two adults splitting the rent. Other bits touch on aging parents who hide frozen food in random spots around the house and the quiet friction of mundane social interactions.
