Andy Kindler makes an unlikely cheerleader, which is precisely why he works as the emcee of a showcase. Taped at the Cisco Stage in Burbank, California, the fifth season of the Comedy Dynamics series hands the veteran neurotic a microphone between short sets from rising performers. Rather than pumping up the crowd with generic hype, Kindler leans into his usual trick: nitpicking his own cadence, questioning setups mid-sentence, and treating the standard mechanics of hosting like an unresolved argument with himself.

The six-episode run features brief sets from a dozen newer comics, including Moses Storm, Kiran Deol, Jamar Neighbors, Tess Barker, and Chinedu Unaka, alongside sketches featuring a mascot named Mr. Microphone and a guest set by George Wallace.

By 2017, Kindler had spent two decades delivering his annual State of the Industry speech at Montreal’s Just for Laughs festival, mocking hack comedy tropes and industry pretension. He brought that exact tension to this Burbank stage, trading the expected polish of a television emcee for the posture of a man who cannot quite believe he agreed to do the gig.
