The Half Hour

Aparna Nancherla

Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min

A deadpan half hour on social dread and everyday anxiety.

Picking up dropped pills off the floor cannot be done without looking like a human red flag. That observation opens Aparna Nancherla’s set, delivered in the quiet, deadpan cadence of someone reading ingredient warnings aloud to a pet. Where many stand-ups treat nervous tension as an obstacle to shout over, Nancherla treats it as the default operating state, meeting ordinary dread with dry matter-of-factness.

Filmed at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans for the fifth season of Comedy Central’s showcase series, the set arrived in the middle of a breakout year. She had just released her debut album, Just Putting It Out There, on Tig Notaro’s imprint, having spent previous seasons in writers’ rooms for Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Her material stays closely trained on interior panic and low-stakes modern indignities. She examines the bizarre grammar of clickbait listicles, recounts a street catcaller who seemed to be field-testing half-baked material, and defends chronic anxiety by arguing that anyone looking at the state of the world without distress simply is not paying attention. A closing chunk about an excruciating dinner date works largely because of her refusal to inflate the drama, letting the social awkwardness speak for itself.
