Appealing to the Mainstream

Brent Weinbach’s entire act relies on making people slightly uncomfortable. He frames his distinct brand of off-key absurdity around a fake premise: an earnest attempt to smooth out his rough edges and finally deliver a set that can appeal to a mainstream audience. To do this, he mimics the rhythms of conventional club comics, but he distorts those tropes until they break. An observational setup devolves into a nesting doll of impressions (a half-Filipino guy doing a Black guy doing a white guy doing a Black guy), while a defense of his own creepy style is backed up by an escalating list of international slang terms for male genitalia.

Filmed at the Colony Theatre in Burbank, California, the hour captured Weinbach at a peak period of his career, during which he was writing for The Eric Andre Show and co-directing the cult web series Pound House. The special originally debuted on the streaming platform Seeso in April 2017 before finding a wider audience on digital platforms and Amazon Prime years later. The set relies heavily on physical mime, unsettling noises, and a disciplined clapping exercise. It is a slow-burn deconstruction of what it takes to get an easy laugh.
