The Russian Optimist
Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2016
Slavic fatalism meets American neurosis in a dry New York club set.
Yakov Smirnoff built a career convincing Americans that the Soviet Union was grim and the United States was wonderful. Ben Rosenfeld takes the updated view that both places are awful, just in completely different ways.
A former Caltech graduate student who left economics for stand-up, Rosenfeld leans into bleak Slavic fatalism across an hour of analytical club material. He recites macabre Russian nursery rhymes, cites research arguing that human monogamy is biologically unnatural, and argues that modern American culture runs entirely on fear.
The set was recorded in September 2015 at the New York Comedy Club and runs 69 minutes. Rosenfeld self-released the audio in early 2016 before Comedy Dynamics picked it up for wide distribution that December, eventually pushing the record to number five on the Amazon comedy sales chart.
