Rant In E-Minor

Bill Hicks

Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2015 · 50 min

A combative audio set recorded during his final year of touring.

Most stand-up sets seek approval from the room; here, the performance operates like an eviction notice. When Hicks tells anti-abortion demonstrators that true believers should lock arms around cemeteries, or argues that wearing a crucifix makes as much sense as greeting Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant, he is not fishing for applause. He is testing how much friction a comedy club can withstand before everyone turns on each other.

Producer Kevin Booth assembled the album from club dates taped throughout 1993, predominantly at the Laff Stop in Austin and Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco, paired with guitar interludes recorded in an Austin studio.

Hicks was privately dealing with terminal pancreatic cancer during these shows, only months before his death in February 1994 at age 32. Rykodisc released the record posthumously in 1997, and Comedy Dynamics reissued the audio digitally in 2015. Across tracks targeting Rush Limbaugh, the Waco siege, and parents who demand deference for reproducing, the room repeatedly bristles. On ‘You’re Wrong Night,’ the crowd balks, and Hicks abandons his routine entirely to berate them through the microphone.
