Live from D.C.

Bill Maher

HBO · 2014 · 61 min

A live political hour taped directly after an episode of Real Time.

Bill Maher turned his tenth HBO hour into a logistical flex. After wrapping a live broadcast of Real Time at one Washington venue, he hopped into a police-escorted motorcade, rode across town to the Warner Theatre, and walked directly onto the stage. The stunt gave the hour a live-wire momentum, playing to an eager room of beltway insiders and political junkies.

The material functions as a time capsule of the late-Obama era. Maher takes his usual swings at conservative logic and organized religion, floating theories on the Republican psyche and suggesting the Pope is secretly an atheist. He touches on midterm elections, income inequality, and his ongoing legal dispute with Donald Trump. It is standard operating procedure for the comedian, right down to a sudden detour into why he thinks tattoos are stupid.

The cross-town gimmick paid off. Bringing his television audience along for the ride helped make the taping HBO’s most-watched comedy broadcast in five years.

The set list

4 bits
  1. Donald Trump suing Bill Maher for $5 million

Recounting and mocking the legal dispute and feud stemming from an illegitimate bet.

  2. Republican outrage over Barack Obama's executive orders

Noting previous conservative presidents like Reagan and Bush used numerous executive orders, while Republicans treat Obama as if he were 'Dracula crossed with Hitler and lung cancer'.

  3. Working with Congress and American political consensus

Arguing politics requires 'being patient with stupid white people' and joking that the common consensus is to bomb Arabs, pay farmers not to grow corn, and name buildings after Ronald Reagan.

  4. Why the Pope is an atheist

Satirical secularist critique examining Pope Francis and religious dogma.

What the critics said

Received positive praise from some critics who found it an uproarious, eloquent, and zealous live performance, while online and audience reviews were split, with detractors citing recycled monologue material, an unfunny intro, and annoying hecklers.

In the room: Rapt and vocal, punctuated by numerous positive and negative hecklers whom Maher repeatedly challenged and silenced from the stage.
