Back to Back
Cameron Esposito & River Butcher
AST Records · Album · 2017 · 65 min
A joint stand-up album split between shared bickering and solo sets.
Most comedy double acts rely on contrast, and the friction here comes from two entirely different stage rhythms bouncing off one marriage. Cameron Esposito charges forward with theatrical momentum, while River Butcher (performing then as Rhea Butcher) works at a deliberate, Midwestern deadpan. Before splitting off for individual sets, they spend the opening stretch sharing the stage, trading stories about tour bus bunks, camping disasters, and the domestic indignities of being married professionals in public.
The second half divides the microphone. Butcher takes the middle third for a relaxed run covering an Ohio childhood, youth baseball, and the baffling construction of sports bras. Esposito closes the set with higher volume, detailing public panic, street encounters in Manhattan, and an intense fixation on Celine Dion.
Recorded in Brooklyn during a fall 2017 cross-country tour, the performance caught both comics at an uncertain career juncture. Their sitcom Take My Wife had been stranded when streaming service Seeso shut down, leaving its completed second season in limbo while they continued co-hosting the Put Your Hands Together showcase in Los Angeles.
Released on audio by aspecialthing records in December 2017, the album went to number one on the iTunes comedy chart.
