HBO Comedy Half-Hour (1995)

Carlos Mencia

HBO · 1995 · 30 min

Carlos Mencia works through high-volume ethnic stereotypes at The Fillmore.

Years before cable television turned him into a household name and then a cautionary tale, Carlos Mencia made his living running race-based compare-and-contrast bits at high volume. He points out that white people hold a near monopoly on dressing like clowns to murder people or shooting up the post office after getting fired, whereas fired Latino workers just shrug, collect unemployment, and head home to watch Luke and Laura on General Hospital.

Taped at The Fillmore in San Francisco, the set aired in September 1995 as the finale of the second season of HBO Comedy Half-Hour. It was Mencia’s second appearance on the series within fourteen months, following his turn hosting the network’s Latino showcase Loco Slam.

He moves at a full sprint through the twenty-eight minutes, running through routines about late-night bulletproof gas station booths and the awkward panic of guessing nationalities in the front row. The performance earned him a CableACE Award nomination for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special, catching him at a moment when his loud, sweaty club rhythm still carried the sheen of an up-and-coming talent.
