Dance Like You Don't Need the Money

Carmen Lynch

Album · 2017

Deadpan club comedy built around quiet delivery and sudden misdirection.

Carmen Lynch works at an unhurried, low simmer, delivering punchlines with the flat indifference of someone reading the side of a cereal box. She leans into minor personal indignities without begging for sympathy, talking through childhood scoliosis screenings, the logistics of sleeping in an adult mouthguard, and the panic of confusing Claritin-D with Plan B. Recorded live at the Punch Line in San Francisco and released in 2017, the set served as her debut album after years of regular appearances on the late-night circuit, including spots on Letterman and Conan. The 22 tracks are kept brief, moving through quick misdirections, giraffe jokes, and cynical dating anecdotes before finishing with a bonus track performed in Spanish. SiriusXM named it the top comedy album of the year, and The New York Times included the record on its short list of recommended comedy streams.
