Chris Tucker

Netflix · 2015 · 1 h 32 min

A physical homecoming about tax trouble, aging, and Michael Jackson.

The set perks up the moment Tucker stops doing standard relationship bits and admits he owed the government millions of dollars. Making light of his well-publicized tax troubles, he quips that he should never have taken advice from Wesley Snipes, turning his sudden financial reckoning into an easy self-own.

Filmed at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, the performance was Tucker’s first standalone comedy special, arriving after years of near-total absence from Hollywood following the Rush Hour movies. Between his early nineties Def Comedy Jam appearances and this 2015 Netflix release, his stand-up had never been captured in long form. Phil Joanou directs, mostly staying out of the way of Tucker’s pacing and high-register physical delivery.

The standout sequence is an extended memory of his friendship with Michael Jackson. Imitating Jackson’s soft-spoken speaking voice and singing impromptu falsetto riffs, Tucker details bizarre car rides and visits to Barry Gibb’s house without relying on the usual supermarket-tabloid angles.
