Glutton For Punishment

Christian Pieper

Comedy Dynamics · 2017 · 40 min

Clean, self-effacing stories about broken bones and Arby's orders.

Christian Pieper builds his set around the mild degradations of everyday life, delivered with the calm resignation of someone used to the floor collapsing under him. His best stretch comes when he tries to build a neighborhood kid’s confidence on a skateboard, steps on the board, and instantly shatters his arm like a 300-pound sack of swearing rocks.

Filmed at the Dry Bar Comedy club in Provo, Utah, and released in June 2017, the set captures Pieper after relocating from the Mountain West circuit to Los Angeles. Operating under the venue’s strictly clean parameters, he bypasses cheap shocks and leans on steady pacing and self-inflicted embarrassment.

He explains the quiet indignity of becoming an Arby’s regular—where the staff doesn’t greet you warmly so much as start dropping emergency curly fries into the fryer—and reads back a polite email from a Seattle Airbnb host warning that a basement room is better suited for thinner people. He also recounts intercepting a jerk’s phone number off a restaurant check to play a long-game text prank.
