A half-hour of meta-comedy and self-aware stage deconstruction.

Andy Kindler’s act is essentially a continuous director’s commentary on his own stand-up. In his 2006 Comedy Central Presents half-hour, he leans heavily into meta-comedy, questioning his own premises and constantly checking in on the flow of his set as it happens. The jokes serve more as vehicles for his self-aware analysis than traditional setups and punchlines.
Filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, the set aired during Season 10 of the long-running showcase. By this point, Kindler was a recognized fixture in the comedy industry. He was fresh off a long run playing a version of himself on Everybody Loves Raymond and had already established his role as the perennial curmudgeon delivering the State of the Industry address at the Montreal Just For Laughs festival.
The material touches on a marijuana trip in Amsterdam, his aversion to astrology, and a routine about the downside of the civil rights movement. The main draw is watching a seasoned professional treat a televised taping like a low-stakes open mic, opting to examine the architecture of a joke rather than just telling one.
