Andy Kindler’s annual State of the Industry address at the Montreal Just for Laughs festival is comedy’s most famous inside-baseball roast. While the tradition has run for decades, the tape of his inaugural 1996 speech spent twenty years locked in a vault before Comedy Dynamics released it as an audio album in 2017. Standing in a crowded Hyatt conference room before a room of exhausted booking agents, TV executives, and fellow comics, Kindler attempts to save the business by complaining about everyone in it. The set is a time capsule of mid-nineties industry frustration. Kindler takes aim at network television’s creative bankruptcy, the corporate greed of Hollywood agencies, and prominent comedians of the era, ranging from HBO’s programming choices to Jay Leno’s late-night dominance. The performance is best remembered for his offer of one million dollars to anyone who can produce video footage of Whoopi Goldberg actually being funny. By 2017, Kindler had built a comfortable career voicing Mort on Bob’s Burgers and making regular late-night appearances, but listening to this archival release reveals a comic finding the exact blueprint for his future. The recording shows Kindler in 1996, shuffling through loose sheets of paper and testing the boundaries of what he could get away with saying to the people who held his career in their hands.
