Comedy Central Presents
Comedy Central · 2003
An early look at the comedian before his arena-filling days.
Long before selling out stadiums, Gabriel Iglesias was a high-energy stand-up working out his signature stage persona in front of a theater audience. Taped at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, this 2003 half-hour set serves as a time capsule from the exact moment his style came together. This is the performance where he introduced his ‘fluffy’ taxonomy of weight, establishing the self-deprecating physical comedy that would define his career.
The 22-minute set showcases his early storytelling ability, particularly in a segment about trying to fit onto amusement park rides with his heavy friends. He details their method for determining who is the largest among them: boarding a roller coaster at Disneyland and counting the clicks of the safety bar, with the lowest number taking the title. The performance also features early impressions, his resemblance to Shrek, and a story about pranking a troublemaking friend.
At this point in his career, his primary television credit was a brief stint on Nickelodeon’s All That. This broadcast was his first major national solo showcase, introducing his clean, animated storytelling and rubber-faced physical bits to a wider cable audience.
