Comedy Central Presents

Greg Fitzsimmons

Comedy Central · 1998 · 30 min

Twenty-two minutes of irritated observations on marriage, religion, and cloning.

Before he became a fixture in writers’ rooms and podcast studios, Greg Fitzsimmons used his first half-hour to catalog the grim visuals of everyday life. The standout material centers on the indignities of marriage, including a bit where he paints a romantic picture of cuddling his wife as she falls asleep, right up until she passes gas that feels like a long hot breath on his thigh. He also tackles the ethical implications of human cloning and the mental scarring required to picture your grandmother naked, concluding that he will never eat raisins again.

Filmed for the inaugural season of Comedy Central Presents in 1998, the television taping drops the comic in front of a fake public park wall covered in graffiti. Fitzsimmons was a few years out from hosting MTV’s Idiot Savants and making his late-night debut, still establishing the irritated voice that would define his later career. The twenty-two-minute set skips the pleasantries to cover the logic of religion, the realities of morning sex, and the low-level annoyance of living in Los Angeles.
