John Caparulo wears a baseball cap and talks in a strained, slightly exhausted register about things that actively annoy him. It is a very specific type of Ohio agitation. He takes the stage looking less like a comedian who prepared a tight twenty minutes for television and more like a guy who just walked in off the street to vent about obnoxious dogs. The half-hour is built on everyday complaints, turning a mundane topic like weird neighborhood yard sales into a focal point for his lingering frustration.
Filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, the 2006 set captures Caparulo just as his career was gathering momentum. Following a breakout showcase at Montreal’s Just For Laughs, he was actively reaching a broader audience by featuring in the Blue Collar Comedy: The Next Generation tour and performing in the documentary Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show. The material here reflects that straightforward working-class sensibility. Rather than reaching for abstract concepts, he sticks to the ground level, spending the back half of the runtime complaining about speeding tickets, air travel, and the strange realities of living with exotic pets.
