Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents

Jonah Ray builds his stand-up around the hyperspecific anxieties of a music obsessive dealing with adulthood. He favors conversational storytelling, turning everyday indignities into structured complaints. The standout bit is an odd, highly detailed anecdote about winding up at a house party with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, only to watch the notorious anti-piracy crusader illegally download music on the internet. It is a perfectly deployed story that plays directly to his demographic.

Filmed at the Royale in Boston for the second season of Comedy Central’s The Half Hour, the set captures Ray right as he was becoming a fixture of the Los Angeles alternative comedy boom. In 2013, he was a regular voice on the Nerdist podcast and busy hosting the Meltdown live show. The material here reflects the affable, slightly defensive persona that made him a trusted host. He rounds out the time with routines about aggressive games of Truth or Dare, the logistics of a live-in girlfriend, and the brutal efficiency with which some women handle breakups.
