Jim Gaffigan’s pivot from a strictly safe, food-and-family comic to someone addressing a global pandemic was both inevitable and slightly jarring. He contrasts these larger societal collapses with smaller, personal defeats, like taking out a reverse mortgage just to upgrade his smartphone.

Filmed at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this 2021 Netflix release marked Gaffigan’s ninth stand-up special and his sixth with the streaming platform. Written and directed by Gaffigan himself, the hour served as a return to massive theatrical stages after the smaller, travelogue format of his 2020 special, The Pale Tourist. While he maintains his famous clean-cut stage presence, there is a distinct, world-weary edge to his material, capturing the fatigue of a father of five who spent too many consecutive months cooped up with his family. The special received positive reviews for its observational style and later earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album.
