Chris Maddock paces the stage in a sweaty, knock-off Nudie suit, performing twangy comedic songs with his backing band, the Charismatics, to justify his self-appointed title of country singer. The hybrid set relies on a mix of straightforward storytelling and deadpan folk tunes that bookend his stand-up. Rather than lean on simple musical parody, he uses the country-and-western framing to anchor a series of highly specific, curmudgeonly complaints.
Filmed at the Hook & Ladder Theater in Minneapolis, the 2020 special was released by Stand Up! Records. Maddock was already well-known to local audiences as a pillar of the Twin Cities scene, having hosted the weekly Death Comedy Jam at Grumpy’s Bar for fifteen years. Though the country music persona started as a sarcastic way to introduce himself at gigs, the special sees him fully commit to the act, delivering memorable rants about ranch dressing alongside songs like Black Mellencamp, which recounts a disastrous attempt to request a song on classic rock radio.
Upon its release, the project found a wider audience, reaching number five on the iTunes comedy chart. Critics highlighted his talent for making potentially touchy topics palatable through a series of deeply personal, self-deprecating stories.
