Lion
Prime Video · 2016 · 61 min
An anxious hour of stand-up about L.A. parenting and HGTV.
Dan Levy’s stand-up is fueled by the exhausting indignities of trying to survive as a family man in Los Angeles. He performs with an anxious, fast-talking energy, translating the hyper-caffeinated hustle of a television writer into domestic panic. The special gets its name from a 4:00 AM text from his personal trainer demanding to know if he is a zebra or a lion. Levy’s immediate realization that he is, at best, a very tired zebra sets the tone for an hour spent charting the quiet defeats of middle-class adulthood.
Originally released in 2016 on the comedy streaming platform Seeso, the special caught Levy at a transitional point in his career. While he was busy writing and producing for network sitcoms like The Goldbergs and Mulaney, this hour allowed him to reestablish his voice on stage. He shares specific, self-deprecating stories, including getting mugged outside a Beverly Hills Lululemon, feeding his crippling obsession with HGTV, and raising a toddler who behaves like a tiny, shirtless Matthew McConaughey. He also recounts the social tension of his son’s bris, recalling a mohel who couldn’t stop trying to pitch jokes to the crowd.
